ITMO LIFECYCLE & CORRESPONDING ADJUSTMENTS
Transforming Climate Action into Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes
Waterships operates a complete Article 6.2 infrastructure enabling partner countries to generate, authorize, transfer, and account for Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) in full compliance with the Paris Agreement.
Our approach combines project development, governmental cooperation, scientific monitoring, MRV+, and international carbon transactions within a single integrated framework.
Step 1
Bilateral Cooperation Framework
The process begins with the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Waterships and the host country’s Ministry of Environment or designated climate authority.
This framework establishes:
- cooperation under Article 6.2
- project eligibility criteria
- authorization procedures
- MRV requirements
- benefit-sharing principles
- national climate contribution alignment
The host country remains sovereign over the authorization of mitigation outcomes and their transfer.
Step 2
Project Development
Waterships develops climate projects capable of generating measurable emission reductions or carbon removals:
- regenerative reforestation
- agroforestry systems
- watershed restoration
- degraded land rehabilitation
- ecosystem protection
- climate resilience infrastructure
Each project is designed to provide environmental, social and humanitarian co-benefits.
Step 3
Monitoring, Reporting & Verification (MRV+)
Waterships deploys its proprietary MRV+ platform combining:
- satellite monitoring
- GIS mapping
- drone surveys
- agronomic measurements
- hydrological indicators
- blockchain traceability
The resulting data provide complete transparency and auditability throughout the project lifecycle.
Step 4
Independent Validation
Projects are assessed by independent validation and verification entities.
Validation confirms:
- additionality
- permanence
- environmental integrity
- monitoring methodology
- compliance with national and international requirements
Step 5
National Authorization
The host country reviews project results and may formally authorize mitigation outcomes for international transfer under Article 6.2.
Only authorized mitigation outcomes may become ITMOs.
This governmental authorization constitutes the legal foundation of the entire mechanism.
Step 6
ITMO Issuance
Following authorization and verification, mitigation outcomes are quantified and issued as ITMOs.
Each ITMO incorporates:
- project identification
- country authorization
- verified climate impact
- registry information
- transfer documentation
This creates a climate asset recognized within the Article 6.2 framework.
Step 7
International Transfer
ITMOs may be transferred to:
- sovereign governments
- climate funds
- international institutions
- corporations with residual emissions obligations
All transfers are documented and secured through dedicated registries and accounting procedures.
Step 8
Corresponding Adjustment
To avoid double counting, the host country applies a Corresponding Adjustment within its national greenhouse gas inventory.
This mechanism guarantees:
- transparency
- accounting integrity
- environmental credibility
- compliance with UNFCCC requirements
Corresponding Adjustments are a cornerstone of Article 6.2.
Step 9
Climate Impact Delivery
The final outcome is a verified and transferable climate asset contributing to:
- carbon neutrality strategies
- net-zero commitments
- climate finance mobilization
- sustainable development
- ecosystem restoration
Waterships ensures full traceability from field operations to international climate accounting.
